Urban Landscapes Revisited :: Grand Rapids

In honor of the new blog format, I thought it would be fun to dive into the archives and dig up one of my favorite subjects, urban landscapes in low light. I always get asked why I like to shoot my urban landscapes at night. Well, I have a couple of reasons!

  • There is a local commercial photographer that does outstanding work. I came across a photo of his of downtown Grand Rapids at night and wanted to buy a print. I called, emailed, called, emailed and could never get this particular photographer to return any of my messages. This went on for months before I finally decided I would learn how to do it myself. Knowing absolutely nothing about photography, I jumped in feet first into one of the most difficult styles, low light photography. In retrospect, I owe that photographer a huge thank you because I probably would not where I am today if he had just sold me that print!
  • I used to be afraid of looking foolish (because I really had little idea of what I was doing) so I would shoot in out of the way places or at night, when there was less chance of being seen by people. Fast forward to today where I don’t think twice about looking foolish to get the shot. Times have changed.

So, without further ado, I present a series of urban landscapes featuring the Grand Rapids skyline.

My most popular photo of downtown Grand Rapids. Currently featured on CBS Digital Billboards.
